Sat, 22 November 2008 One of the most powerful tools that I use for teaching online course is screen recording or sometimes called screen casts. Screen recording is a digital recording the computer screen. Not only can you capture the video but audio can be captured also, allowing narration to take place. Really good screen recording software can very expensive, but recently I found an online screen recording tool that is free. Since ScreenToaster is online, it works with any platform (Windows Vista, Mac OS and Linux) and also allows the final project to be converted to Flash so they can be shared online. Now, the only problem with ScreenToaster is that it is currently in its Beta stages...so you have to register to get an invitation key. Fri, 7 November 2008 ![]() Recently, I had the chance to try out a couple more small laptops called netbooks. Last month, I tried out the Dell Mini 9, which was a very nice netbook for the price. This month I tried out the ASUS Eee PC 1000 and the Acer Aspire One, both of which have received very good reviews...but to be honest, there is nothing better than to try them out for yourself. The ASUS is the largest of the netbooks, boasting a 10 inch screen. It also offers a larger keyboard than the rest, making it a winner in my book. The ASUS comes loaded with the choice of operating systems, Linux or XP Home edition. It also uses the faster 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor along with 1GB of DDR memory. The chassis has an Ethernet port, a single USB port, plus a pair of audio ports. There are two additional USB ports, an SD card reader and a VGA output. Like many of the netbooks, the ASUS also has a built in webcam. (Additional upgrade options available)
The next netbook is the Acer Aspire One. Having owned an Acer in the past, I confident that it would not let me down. The Acer offer the user an 8.9" screen, which is reflected in a smaller keyboard...about an inch smaller that the ASUS, which I found to be the biggest downside to this laptop. But, like the ASUS, the Acer is packed with the 1.6GHz Atom processor and 160 GB hard drive or an 8GB SSD storage drive and an 802.11g/b wireless card and a webcam. The Acer also comes loaded with Linux or Windows XP Home along with three USB ports, SD card reader, an Ethernet port and a VGA-out. There's a Kensington lock too, naturally, as well as a headphone and microphone port. (Additional upgrade option available)
Between the two laptops, my favorite is the ASUS Eee PC 1000...which really surprised me. Not only did the larger keyboard make my surfing and typing a breeze, but it also had a more solid feel. The mouse design also made navigating easier because the mouse buttons were located at the bottom of the mouse, while the Acer put them on the side. I also noticed that it ran faster. Now the faster operation could be because the ASUS was running Linux on a solid state hard drive while the Acer was running XP Home on a 160 Gig SATA hard drive. Pricing for the laptops run around $349 dollars on up depending upon upgrade options and operating systems. For additional information on these netbooks, go to: Acer [Click Here]

Sun, 2 November 2008 Here is a great Web 2.0 tool that will have many uses in your classroom...no matter what age you teach. Wordle is a great tool for generating something called word clouds. Either type or copy and paste in your text and let Wordle generate a unique word cloud. The clouds created give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. Wordle lets users change fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, save them or do a print screen to save your project. Wordle would be a great way for students to check what words are being over used in their writing by simply past their text into the Wordle text box. Another way to use Wordle in the classroom is to have students create special word walls (Examples: adjectives, synonyms, antonyms) Category: general -- posted at: 9:13 PM Comments[1] |

Sun, 7 September 2008 ![]() I will be honest with you, one thing that I really hate to buy is ink for a printer. Recently my laser printer ran out of toner and let me tell you, it was just not a good time for this to happen. I have always learned to keep at least one extra ink cartridge or laser toner cartridge around the house, because...let's be honest, they only run out when your really need them. I have tried every service out there for printer cartridge service, some are better than others. Some are refill store fronts and some have been online discount sites. This time, I decided to try a service suggested by a friend called OCinkjet.com. I was told I would not regret it and to be honest, what did I have to lose. Well, so far I have been very pleased. The prices were very competitive and the service was fast. The great part was that my the savings they gave me on my order was not eaten up by the shipping...they have a $1.99 flat rate shipping on all orders, no matter how big or small. Wed, 3 September 2008 ![]() Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, Firefox, and now Crome. Of course Google is taking on the Internet Explorer which at least three-fourths of the world uses to surf the net. So what makes it so special, so far all I have noticed is a simple and clutter free interface. Unlike many browser, crome default look is clean and simple. Of course Google boasts that Crome is sleeker, faster and a more secure alternative to Internet Explorer. Wed, 13 August 2008 ![]() Last week I purchased a Kodak EasyShare 5300 All In One printer for our TechTeacher Network of Woot.com. We really need the All In One functions which are to print, scan, copy, and photo printing. It offers the basics that we normally look for and we couldn't pass on the $39 price tag. Yes, it was factory refurbished model, but you can't even buy ink for that price. It origianlly sells for $149 to $200. It is a pretty average sized All-In-One and stands 18.8 inches wide, 14.7 inches deep, and 8.8 inches tall. The printer has two front-mounted memory card slots take most common cards and has two mounted two front mounted USB ports. The EasyShare 5300's also includes a 3-inch LCD screen which which is hinged so you can tilt it forward for viewing. The printer uses a two-cartridge system and what Kodak calls "six-ink" printing. The black cartridge costs around $10 to replace and the color tank costs $15. I haven't check to see what local stores charge to refill the cartridges yet. I also wanted to know what the cost per page was and found that Kodak estimates that a page of black text costs 3 cents and a page of color graphics costs 7 cents. This of course is pretty good for an ink jet...remember that laser printer usually run under a penny a page. So far the only issues that I have run across is the slow software installation...I can't offer a fix for that...and a paper jam error after taking it out of the box. To fix the paper jam error fill both the 8.5x11 and the 4x6 paper trays with paper...pushing in the photo paper before starting. Then restart the printer...this may require you to unplug it if you got the paper jam error. This should fix the problem and you can now print a calibration sheet. Once that is finished, pull the photo paper tray back out. For great deals like this one, go to www.woot.com

Thu, 26 June 2008 As I mentioned in my last podcast, I have been using Viddler to host video tutorials for an online class that I am teaching. To create the video, I am using an old HP laptop running a FREE screen capture program call CamStudio. Because of the age of the computer and lack of power, I need to keep these recording as simple as I can. So I run CamStudio as I talk over the presentation. The down side to this method is that it does not allow for any editing...if you make a mistake, you record it all again. Now there are higher end programs that do screen capture, and allow you to edit and add vocal tracks and annotations, but there is a larger price tag with these tools. Also, these tools require more ram and processor speed.

Wed, 11 June 2008 Going Global Part 2 INTRODUCTION: GOING GLOBAL Part 2 One of the free services that I have used in the past is a clearing house called GobalSchoolnet.org. Whether you are the creator of a project looking for partners or a classroom teachers looking for another classroom to partner with…. Global SchoolNet's mission is to support 21st century learning by engageing teachers and students in meaningful project learning exchanges with people around the world to develop literacy and communication skills, foster teamwork and collaboration, encourage workforce preparedness and create multi-cultural understanding. We prepare youth for full participation as productive and effective citizens in an increasing global economy. The nice thing about this service is that classroom can located other classrooms that may not have the higher end conferencing equipment and use a simple setup like a web camera running through Skype…Skype is free and so would be the call. Another service that is available is a pay service called The Global Nomads Group. Started in 1998, the mission of GNG has been to Connect students from around the world through video conferencing. The programs that hey offer compliment what students are getting in the classroom but with real-world enrichment. With this service, student can virtually travel to other countries….from there can learn the history, the positives and negatives of what is happening in that country, and compare and contrast their lives…and realize that we they are not so different. The GNG programs are unique every year and pre-recorded sessions are available on their web site so you can experience in advance. Global Nomads is a non-profit funded through Polycom and other foundations and corporations. Their programs cost- $125 -$175 per session and are usually delivered in a series. A polycom video conferencing unit is required to participate in these programs.
DOCUMENT CAMERAS First of all…what should one look for in a document camera. To honest, it is like a lot of technology out there, it depends on how it is going to be used. Believe it or not, document cameras range greatly not only in price, but also in features….so let me just touch briefly on some basic features that you should consider when purchasing one of these devices. The first one is resolution; when shopping for digital still cameras and video camera you always try to get the greatest mega pixels…the same rule should apply with a document camera. The higher the resolution…the greater the detail and the better the image. Try looking at a couple of things to help…look at how the document camera displays fonts…they should be sharp, clean, and clear…the edges should not be soften or smudged. Also, try to look for at least 3 mega pixels….this should really be the lowest that you should be willing to go. The next feature is zoom - depending on what you are using the document camera for…you should always look again for the highest optical zoom. A simple test for the zoom is laying down a dollar bill and looking to see how well the zoom does with displaying the filaments and threads. Another trick that I was taught is to use the back of the five dollar and zoom in on the Lincoln Memorial….you should be able to see the states listed at the top of the building. The optical zoom uses the actual lens to bring the item closer….where as the digital zoom...isn't really a zoom, but actually crops the entire image and then digitally enlarges the size….which after a point, causes the image to become pixilated and unrecognizable…therefore decreasing image quality. So…focus on the optical zoom and don"t worry so much about the digital zoom. Then there is the focus. Look for a document camera that not only has manual focus, but also auto focus. The camera should easily focus in on the items that you want to view. Sometimes this can be difficult depending on the color of the paper, the lighting, or if the item has a shine or gloss to it. I also like documents cameras that offer this feature on the remote….this way adjustment can be made on the fly. The next feature that is really important is the light or lighting. Depending on the model…a document camera can have anywhere from one light to three lights. Smaller units without a platform may just have a single light to eliminate the document or object that is being presented…where larger units may have two lighting arms along with a lit base. The type of lights used is also important…LED lights are my presence. The built-in LED lighting system provides cool to the touch, natural white light ……plus LED lights also offer a longer life…some up to 10 years. A couple of other features that help make the document camera experience a little more valuable is having a tilting camera head. Having this feature allows more flexibility when show a document and making adjustment to the image. And finally…having a remote control that offers the same feature that are on the camera. This simple little feature allows the presenter to move freely around the room without being tied to the camera. So what do you need to use a document camera….well you will need something to project the image with:
Some optional items that can be used with a document camera are

Viddler Saves the Day! I have been creating and teaching online course for many years now.One of my goals when doing so is integrating as many tools as possible to help meet the learning style of the students. One of the tools that I like to use is the use of video tutorials. Well recently, I noticed that one of the content delivery services was not cooperating with the video tutorials that I was trying to post. I tried every format supported by the service, but with no luck. Finally I decided to upload all of the tutorials to Viddler. Viddler is a FREE online service that lets you upload, enhance, and share digital video quickly and easily inside your web browser. Viddler supports .mov .mpg .wmv .avi .mpg4 and just about any format that you can think of. Then, once you video has been uploaded, it converts it to a flash format so it can be streamed online. This means you can watch videos without having to wait for it download. What I also like about this service is it is a secure system and prevents other people from watching the video…I can control if I want to make them public or private. In my case I keep them private, but embedded the provided code so that the videos would seem as if it is streaming from my course. So not only is this faster than actually uploading the video files and then embedding as content, but it also speeds up the viewing for the students taking the course. Viddler also offers features which I am not currently using…like viewer comments on the timeline of the video and you can also get viewing stats. All I can say is that Viddler has Really Saved the Day for me….and it seems to show promise for education. Now, like most public hosting services, I wouldn"t send my student directly to the Viddler site because there is a chance that some of the public content may not be suitable for children…..and even adults. But I really like the idea that I Viddler gives me a simple code that can be used to embed my videos or selected videos on a class web page, a content delivery service, or even a classroom blog. So, check out Viddler…and let me know what you think. CLOSING Comments[0] |
Mon, 26 May 2008 ![]() For the last two years, I have been using the BlueMic Snowball to record my podcast, vidcast, and anything else that requires a microphone. To be honest, for $99.00, you can't find a better USB microphone. This week, BlueMic sent me their newest USB microphone called the Snowflake, the little brother to the Snowball. I could wait to open the box and try it out. I must say, BlueMic has done it again by creating a USB bus powered capsule microphone with the elegant/retro design that they are known for. The compact Snowflake microphone comes with its USB cable tuck neatly into a compact case. When unfolded, you will discover a solidly built microphone that can either clip to your laptop or sit neatly on your desktop. This mic is perfect for podcasting, recording digital stories, narrating presentation, or just about any activity that requires a microphone. I will be recording my next podcasting using this mic so you can hear it for yourself. This can be purchased from Apple for around $79.00.

Sun, 18 May 2008 ![]() I recently purchased the Nikon Coolpix S210 Plum point and shoot for our family. Having a limit budget...but wanting the features and quality of a high end camera, my research lead me to the Nikon Coolpix S210. Let's just say, it has gone above and beyond my expectations. The S210 features Electronic VR Image Stabilization which is perfect in for adults or if you decide to put it in the hands of students. It also offers extended light sensitivity settings up to ISO 2000 for sharper images, especially in low light conditions or when capturing moving subjects. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically detects and corrects red eye. D-Lighting corrects excessive back-light or insufficient flash. Nikon's Face-Priority AF automatically finds and focuses on up to 12 faces within one frame. The S210 also offers the ability to record movies...and unlike other cameras, it lets you zoom while recording. This camera is a steal at $179. I give it 8 out of 5 stars!! Sun, 18 May 2008 ![]() I couldn't wait to share this one and promise to share more details about it in a future podcast. When asked by educators about a tool for video conferencing, I usually answer Skype. It is safe and secure and FREE! But, recently I stumble across an incredible video conferencing site called PalBee. Now, I haven't given it a real run for its money...but the little bit that I have used of it, I am sold. Now PalBee is not only an online video conferencing tool that has a built in whiteboard, but it also lets you record and archive your videos so you can share them in the future. It allows up to 9 people to conference in real-time at a time. With the built in whiteboard, members can collaborate by drawing, adding photos or text, and PowerPoint presentations. Tue, 13 May 2008 ![]() I gave up the dreaded corded mouse many years ago and have never looked back. Not only is a wireless mouse a must for adults, but they also are a great addition to school computer labs and laptop carts. I have discovered that not only are there adults who have difficulties using the laptop mouse, there are students who struggle also. Sat, 19 April 2008 ![]() The battle between the Mac and the PC has been raging for years. Many businesses, school districts, and universities either have to choose one or the other, or take on the task of supporting both platforms. But with the with the release of Parallels Desktop for Mac (June 2006), this issue may be resolved. Parallels is emulation software which allows Mac users the ability to run Windows and its applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered Mac. Users can switch between each operating system without shutting down or adding additional hardware. It allows the user to leave Mac applications open and start up Windows XP through Parallels and switch back and forth. Parallels allows the Mac side to share items such as the network connection, firewire and usb ports with XP. The benefits of running Parallels on a Macintosh is that you get the best of both worlds (Mac and PC) with just one computer. Wed, 12 March 2008 ![]() As many of you know, the TechTeacher Network runs with a very low overhead. Those of you who have been listening to the podcast for the last two years know that I continue to use a HP laptop that has seen better days. In fact, I believe I have overhauled it twice since starting this podcast. Because of this, I have had to hold off on the vidcast (video casts) that I used to produce because the laptop can't take the stress...and neither can I : ) My goal for year three is to take this podcast to the next level. That means actually upgrading to a newer computer, so that the production of this podcast can be a little smoother and so I can bring back vidcast and possibly so some live video streaming shows. Another goal is upgrade many of the free services that I currently use to services that would allow more flexibility and listener participation and collaboration. The goal is to make your surfing experience a great learning experience. Last week I discovered a service called "Pownce". I could tell right away that there was something different about this service. Pownce is social network which lets users send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. This can all be done through you personal Pownce web site or through a free desktop application. After using this service and slowly building my friends list, my thoughts turned of course to the classroom and other learning environments. Could this tool be safely used in education...especially in middle and high school classrooms? I am actually considering using with some upcoming online courses. So what do you think? Here is my challenge...join Pownce and see what you think. Also, take some time and send me an invite so we can network. Sat, 16 February 2008 ![]() Let's be honest...those of us in education are always looking for great deals. So I am going to share another one of my addictions...or should I say secrets...Yugster. Yugster is a "One Day Deal" website. They will have one product a day starting at 6:00 am every day until it is sold out. So by becoming a Yugster member gets you first dibs on some great deals. They offer daily deals on computer electronics, consumer electronics, general merchandise, and sometimes hard to find items. The most exciting days to shop are when they are running a YugDown. When you see the orange banner on the top of Yugster, a YugDown is under way. They dramatically drop their prices for a short period of time. So instead of a daily deal, they keep listing products and once they are gone, they move on to the next. Wed, 12 December 2007 ![]() Have you started your Christmas shooping yet? If not, or if you are having a difficult time finding that perfect gift, here is a suggestion. Using LCD technology, digital photo frames can be a great and exciting way to share those digital memories that maybe never make it off of your computer. Prices range form $59 to $299 depending on size and features. I recently purchased the Photoblitz 5.6" frame from TigerDirect for $69.00 and received a 1 gig SD card to go with it. Fri, 7 December 2007 ![]() One thing that I hear all of the time from educators is...where can I download free music loops or sound effects legally. Finally, I have a great answer and I think you will agree. SoundSnap.com is a huge database containing public domain loops, sound effects and audio clips. All of the sounds on this site have been tagged and categorized for easy searching. On top of that, listeners can preview the sounds using a built in player and then if they like it, the sounds can downloaded them right away in multiple formats (MP3, AIFF, and WAV). Now just like most sites that allow public content to be uploaded with very few restrictions; I would caution schools to let students search the site for sounds because there may be some inappropriate content there. My suggestion would be for the teacher to search and download loops and sounds and then let students go from there. Category: general -- posted at: 9:27 PM Comments[0] |
Tue, 4 December 2007 Creating presentations and sharing them has just gotten easier. On top of that, students now have a way to create and share their projects from any location. Being web based, means that presentation can be created form any computer and shared with anyone and anywhere. Thumstack works with any brower and again, because it is web based, works with any operating system. Another great feature about Thumbstack is that it works just like the popular presentation tools, but without the price. It offers a drag and drop feature, transitions, actions, sounds and videos, and a drawing tool. Finally, with Thumbstacks remote meeting service, your presentation can be shared in real-time over the web. The clean and simple interface will make this tool appropriate for a wide range of users. With that in mind, I really needed a simple but clean tool to record these sessions for podcast and found such a tool...Pamlea. Now Pamela is a Skype certified add-on toolbox which offers a wide range of functions to enhance your Skype experience. But the greatest feature is a function not available in Skype which is the ability to record a Skype call as a MP3. This is perfect for recording those interview or round-table podcasts. One of the most powerful tools that I use for teaching online course is screen recording or sometimes called screen casts. For more information or to register

Here is a great Web 2.0 tool that will have many uses in your classroom...no matter what age you teach. Another way to use Wordle in the classroom is to have students create special word walls (Examples: adjectives, synonyms, antonyms)

One thing that educators forget to purchase when putting together an iPod kit for their classroom are some AC/USB chargers. Even though iPods can be charged with a USB cable on a computer...this is not always convenient or secure. The easiest way to manage this task is by using this Griffin PowerBlock can be used to charge virtually any iPod from a wall outlet. It features a 30-pin connector that fits iPods with dock connectors, and you can also plug the 1G iPod shuffle directly into the AC wall adapter via the USB-style power port. It features standard Type A USB connectors that work with iPod and other USB-chargeable devices, and flat-blade non-polarized wall prongs that work well with international adapters and in multi-outlet configurations. Compact and easy to travel with, the PowerBlock also includes a USB-to-dock cable can be disconnected for use with a computer for the ultimate in flexible usability.
