"Now hear this!"  More and more I am hearing about classrooms putting is classroom audio systems because they not only help those who may have hearing difficulties, but they also allow all students to hear content more clearly. They are also said to engage students, reduce teacher vocal strain, and also helps in rooms with poor acoustics. What do you think? Do you have any classrooms using classroom audio systems? If so, how are they working and are there benefits? Click on the comment link below and share your thoughts.

There is nothing like a good classic book, a cup of coffee, and a big comfy chair. There is also nothing like a free classic book in audio form, a thermal cup of coffee, and a long commute to work. Of course the later is probably more a reality for some of us and LibriVox can help make it possible. Of course, these classics are not only perfect for the aging life long learner, but also for your literature class. Audio books are a not only great for the daily drive, but they terrific tools struggling readers and those who need to be challenged.

The LibriVox mission is "To make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the Internet" and that they are. LibriVox uses volunteers to record chapters of books that fall under public domain. They then release these audio books either through their web site or through the podcast section in iTunes.

So, no matter how you plan on using audio books, LibroVox can help make it happen. For more information, please [Click Here]

Last week I purchased a Kodak EasyShare 5300 All In One printer for our TechTeacher Network of Woot.com. We really need the All In One functions which are to print, scan, copy, and photo printing. It offers the basics that we normally look for and we couldn't pass on the $39 price tag. Yes, it was factory refurbished model, but you can't even buy ink for that price. It origianlly sells for $149 to $200.

It is a pretty average sized All-In-One and stands 18.8 inches wide, 14.7 inches deep, and 8.8 inches tall.  The printer has two front-mounted memory card slots take most common cards and has two mounted two  front mounted USB ports. The EasyShare 5300's also includes a 3-inch LCD screen which which is hinged so you can tilt it forward for viewing.

The printer uses a two-cartridge system and what Kodak calls "six-ink" printing. The black cartridge costs around $10 to replace and the color tank costs $15. I haven't check to see what local stores charge to refill the cartridges yet. I also wanted to know what the cost per page was and found that Kodak estimates that a page of black text costs 3 cents and a page of color graphics costs 7 cents. This of course is pretty good for an ink jet...remember that laser printer usually run under a penny a page.

So far the only issues that I have run across is the slow software installation...I can't offer a fix for that...and a paper jam error after taking it out of the box. To fix the paper jam error fill both the 8.5x11 and the 4x6 paper trays with paper...pushing in the photo paper before starting. Then restart the printer...this may require you to unplug it if you got the paper jam error. This should fix the problem and you can now print a calibration sheet. Once that is finished, pull the photo paper tray back out.

For great deals like this one, go to www.woot.com

I demonstrated how to build you own external hard drives over a year ago. I truly believe that every educator should have their own external hard drive to back up their data. My TechTeacher Tech pick is a 120GB USB external hard drive for only $48.95. The nice thing is, this Maxtor hard drive does it with a touch of a button. This is a secure way to carry all of their important files and documents with you or it is a great way to back-up all of those videos and music. Whether it's that critical office proposal or your latest digital music and videos, it's simple and lightweight to take between the home and school. At this price, they probably will not last long. It didn't take very long this summer for my wife and I to hear the words form our son, "I board". Of course, we offered the classic suggestions, go ride your bike, read a book, why don't you write in your journal, or why don't you pick up your room. Then I got to thinking...why not blog about something you love...LEGOs. So together we build a blog page together. We set some ground rules, we kept them simple because he is only seven:
    1. We would publish together
    2. He would need to write out his posting on paper first...we would edit together
    3. Content comes first, then images

Not only will this blog keep his writing skills fresh over the summer, but I felt the comments or feedback would be encouraging. There is nothing more exciting than writing to an authentic audience. On top of that, we will be tracking the visits using Google Analytics which will actually show the location of each visitor. I also decided to add some Yahoo Click Ads so he could raise some funds from each click for the LEGO Robotic Kit he has been asking for. I will keep you posted on this project during the year, and if you would like to visit and leave a comment, I am sure he would be thrilled.  [Click Here]

I ran across this add for a new online store called Goodwill Too. It is the same Goodwill, carrying donated items, but they also carry refurbished and new items. What caught my attention was the add showed iPods and accessories...I couldn't pass clicking on the link. To my surprise, the prices were very cheap, at least compared to the other prices that I found for the iPod Classic Video and new 4 and 8 Gig Nano. They also offer a 1 year warranty that is really unheard of on refurbished item. As I have mentioned in the past, I believe the Nano is the perfect device for the classroom. The price is manageable for buying sets and the size really fits the hands of the students. For more information and to find your own bargains. Visit their site and not only get a great deal, but help someone in need at the same time.

As I mentioned in my last podcast, I have been using Viddler to host video tutorials for an online class that I am teaching. To create the video, I am using an old HP laptop running a FREE screen capture program call CamStudio. Because of the age of the computer and lack of power, I need to keep these recording as simple as I can. So I run CamStudio as I talk over the presentation. The down side to this method is that it does not allow for any editing...if you make a mistake, you record it all again. Now there are higher end programs that do screen capture, and allow you to edit and add vocal tracks and annotations, but there is a larger price tag with these tools. Also, these tools require more ram and processor speed.

In a past posting, I shared with you a great way for your school raise some additional funding for programs by using something called LinkShare. Today, I am going to share another great tool called a pay per click ad (PPC)
A Pay Per Click ad (PPC)  is an advertising model used by Yahoo Publisher or Google AdSense on their own search engines and public websites. These programs pay website owners when visitors clicks on an ad posted on their website.
When one of these services is added to your website, ads that are relevant to the content of the page will appear in the form of a banner. When visitors click, the hosting web site receives a commission in return.
For more information about these services, visit Yahoo! Publisher Network or Google AdSense, and let your web site, help raise your school money.

Summer is here and it is time for educators to relax and restore their batteries. Here is a little something that will really help and at the same time, let you listen in style.

Sennheiser is always my first pick for headphones and headsets. The name has stood the test of time in the world of professional broadcasting and in the last few years, they have made their appearance for us commoners.

The Sennheiser MXL 51 Street Basswind Stereo Earbuds, unlike iPod earbuds, are discrete and designed with comfort and sound-quality in mind...or should I say in ear. They offer powerful, bass-driven sound quality, which only Sennheiser can do. These headset also include a handy lanyard to wear around your neck to ensure that your earbuds stay with you while you're out and about and working out over the summer.

For more information please [Click Here] and spoil yourself...I am.

    Going Global Part 2
The Demise of the Overhead Projector - Document Cameras
    Sponsor Spot - www.bitleap.com
    Nod 32
    Viddler Save the Day
    Take the Pounce Challenge

    INTRODUCTION:
You are listening to the TechTeacher Network…a podcast for the 21st century.

    GOING GLOBAL Part 2
This episode is sponsored by by BitLeap, providers of highly secure, automatic local and offsite backup and email archiving services.…this podcast is also made possible by donations from listeners like you. Thank you for your support.

One of the free services that I have used in the past is a clearing house called GobalSchoolnet.org. Whether you are the creator of a project looking for partners or a classroom teachers looking for another classroom to partner with…. Global SchoolNet's mission is to support 21st century learning by  engageing teachers and students in meaningful project learning exchanges with people around the world to develop literacy and communication skills, foster teamwork and collaboration, encourage workforce preparedness and create multi-cultural understanding. We prepare youth for full participation as productive and effective citizens in an increasing global economy. The nice thing about this service is that classroom can located other classrooms that may not have the higher end conferencing equipment and use a simple setup like a web camera running through Skype…Skype is free and so would be the call.

Another service that is available is a pay service called The Global Nomads Group. Started in 1998, the mission of GNG has been to Connect students from around the world through video conferencing. The programs that hey offer compliment what students are getting in the classroom but with real-world enrichment. With this service, student can virtually travel to other countries….from there can learn the history, the positives and negatives of what is happening in that country, and compare and contrast their lives…and realize that we they are not so different. The GNG programs are unique every year and pre-recorded sessions are available on their web site so you can experience in advance.

Global Nomads is a non-profit funded through Polycom and other foundations and corporations. Their programs cost- $125 -$175 per session and are usually delivered in a series. A polycom video conferencing unit is required to participate in these programs.

    DOCUMENT CAMERAS
In this episode, I am going to discuss documents cameras and the some things to look for when purchasing one….and share some ways that they can be integrated into your instruction.

First of all…what should one look for in a document camera. To honest, it is like a lot of technology out there, it depends on how it is going to be used. Believe it or not, document cameras range greatly not only in price, but also in features….so let me just touch briefly on some basic features that you should consider when purchasing one of these devices.

The first one is resolution; when shopping for digital still cameras and video camera you always try to get the greatest mega pixels…the same rule should apply with a document camera. The higher the resolution…the greater the detail and the better the image. Try looking at a couple of things to help…look at how the document camera displays fonts…they should be sharp, clean, and clear…the edges should not be soften or smudged. Also, try to look for at least 3 mega pixels….this should really be the lowest that you should be willing to go.

The next feature is zoom - depending on what you are using the document camera for…you should always look again for the highest optical zoom. A simple test for the zoom is laying down a dollar bill and looking to see how well the zoom does with displaying the filaments and threads.  Another trick that I was taught is to use the back of the five dollar and zoom in on the Lincoln Memorial….you should be able to see the states listed at the top of the building. The optical zoom uses the actual lens to bring the item closer….where as the digital zoom...isn't really a zoom, but actually crops the entire image and then digitally enlarges the size….which after a point, causes the image to become pixilated and unrecognizable…therefore decreasing image quality. So…focus on the optical zoom and don"t worry so much about the digital zoom.

Then there is the focus. Look for a document camera that not only has manual focus, but also auto focus. The camera should easily focus in on the items that you want to view. Sometimes this can be difficult depending on the color of the paper, the lighting, or if the item has a shine or gloss to it. I also like documents cameras that offer this feature on the remote….this way adjustment can be made on the fly.

The next feature that is really important is the light or lighting. Depending on the model…a document camera can have anywhere from one light to three lights. Smaller units without a platform may just have a single light to eliminate the document or object that is being presented…where larger units may have two lighting arms along with a lit base. The type of lights used is also important…LED lights are my presence. The built-in LED lighting system provides cool to the touch, natural white light ……plus LED lights also offer a longer life…some up to 10 years.

A couple of other features that help make the document camera experience a little more valuable is having a tilting camera head. Having this feature allows more flexibility when show a document and making adjustment to the image. And finally…having a remote control that offers the same feature that are on the camera. This simple little feature allows the presenter to move freely around the room without being tied to the camera.

So what do you need to use a document camera….well you will need something to project the image with:

    • Television (which should be large enough for a classroom to see)
    • Computer monitor (fine for small groups)
    • Projector (the best choice for classrooms)

Some optional items that can be used with a document camera are

    • Laptop

Some ways to use a document camera:

    —  Display information out of books or magazines
    —  Display notes or documents
    —  Display student projects or writing
    —  Demonstrate live writing, problem solving or the working of an equation (Now this can be done on paper or  I suggest using a small dry -erase maker board)

    •  Display 3D items – some examples– show your class fossils, leaves meals worms or you can show the difference between beetles and butterflies in a unique and new way
    • Show live demonstrations -  example – show the class the proper way to count back change, use a ruler, or sew on a button
    • With document cameras that offering recording software- Record demonstrations to be achieved or posted for students who are absent
    • Demonstration activities such as using a map or map key…or maybe how to use the calculator or classroom iPod.
    • Geometry Classes - use your document camera to add a 3D twist to the complicated world of pyramids, cones and cylinders.
    • Art Classes - Students can watch and see more clearly techniques on molding clay and making perfect brush strokes or show printed materials

Now there are many more ideas for integrating document cameras in the classroom. Now if you would like additional information on document camera…subscribe to the TechTeacher Tech Letter….the very first issue will not only include "Document Camera Tip” but also additional tech tips for educators.

    NOD 32
Whether it is you personal computer or your schools computers…virus protection is a necessity in this day and age. Malware is running ramped and you need to kill the viruses before the kill you system. In the past I have always used tools like Nortons and McAfee to protect my home computers, but the problem is that every time they come out with a new version, they seems to take up more hard drive space and more processor speed. After listening to Leo Laporte – creator of the TWIT podcasts, and doing some research, I finally I figure it was time for a change. I have found the perfect protection for my home computers. What I discovered was that when  it comes to proactive visrus protection, Eset's NOD32 was the hands-down winner in "Virus Stoppers," It actually was one of the top protectors against spyware. Not only does it protect well but the programwas very easy to install and I never seem to notice it scanning when I am using the computer…unlike the other services I have tried. It also has a very small foot print so it does not take as much hard drive space. Now NOD32  ties you're your Outlook or Outlook Express for e-mail scanning. NOD 32 does not work with or integrate with any instant messaging applications for scanning sent links or files. It also scans for spyware and adware in addition to viruses and it can perform all those scans at once, while some other tools require multiple scans.

     Viddler Saves the Day!

I have been creating and teaching online course for many years now.One of my goals when doing so is integrating as many tools as possible to help meet the learning style of the students. One of the tools that I like to use is the use of video tutorials. Well recently, I noticed that one of the content delivery services was not cooperating with the video tutorials that I was trying to post. I tried every format supported by the service, but with no luck. Finally I decided to upload all of the tutorials to Viddler. Viddler is a FREE online service that lets you upload, enhance, and share digital video quickly and easily inside your web browser. Viddler supports .mov .mpg .wmv .avi .mpg4 and just about any format that you can think of. Then, once you video has been uploaded, it converts it to a flash format so it can be streamed online. This  means you can watch videos without having to wait for it download. What I also like about this service is it is a secure system and prevents other people from watching the video…I can control if I want to make them public or private. In my case I keep them private, but embedded the provided code so that the videos would seem as if it is streaming from my course. So not only is this faster than actually uploading  the video files and then embedding as content, but it also speeds up the viewing for the students taking the course. Viddler also offers features which I am not currently using…like viewer comments on the timeline of the video and you can also get viewing stats.  All I can say is that Viddler has Really Saved the Day for me….and it seems to show promise for education.  Now, like most public hosting services, I wouldn"t send my student directly to the Viddler site because there is a chance that some of the public content may not be suitable for children…..and even adults. But I really like the idea that I Viddler gives me a simple code that can be used to embed my videos or selected videos on a class web page, a content delivery service, or even a classroom blog. So, check out Viddler…and let me know what you think.

For the last two years, I have been using the BlueMic Snowball to record my podcast, vidcast, and anything else that requires a microphone. To be honest, for $99.00, you can't find a better USB microphone.

This week, BlueMic sent me their newest USB microphone called the Snowflake, the little brother to the Snowball. I could wait to open the box and try it out. I must say, BlueMic has done it again by creating a USB bus powered capsule microphone with the elegant/retro design that they are known for. The compact Snowflake microphone comes with its USB cable tuck neatly into a compact case. When unfolded, you will discover  a solidly built microphone that can either clip to your laptop or sit neatly on your desktop. This mic is perfect for podcasting, recording digital stories, narrating presentation, or just about any activity that requires a microphone.

I will be recording my next podcasting using this mic so you can hear it for yourself.

This can be purchased from Apple for around $79.00.Apple Store

So you finally got that Apple iPod/MP3 player, but you don't know how to share your content with students and teachers, well today's pick is the solutions. Yugster is offering a great deal on the XtremeMac HomeShow Audio/Video Connection Kit for iPod and MP3 players.

The HomeShow A/V Connection Kit is a complete 4-piece home audio/video connection kit that gives you everything they need to play your content through home entertainment systems. View video and pictures from your iPod on your classroom projecotr or television with the home theater cable. Share your playlists via a stereo with the home audio cable. You can even connect your MP3 player to external computer speakers or the "Aux In" port on your car stereo with the included auxiliary audio cable.

The home theater cable is a composite cable (red/white/yellow) that connects your MP3 player with video to any television or home theater component; the home audio cable uses composite stereo outputs to connect your MP3 player to a home audio system. The minijack-to-minijack auxiliary audio cable connects your MP3 player to stereos or computer speakers, while the always-useful audio splitter allows users to connect two pairs of earbuds to the same player to share music with a friend.

Each cable measures four feet long to ensure ample reach to all of your audio and video components. All cables are quality-built with such features as grip-textured connectors, so it's easy to connect and disconnect the cable without yanking, color-coded collars for easy recognition and reinforced joints so the cables and their terminators stay together for years to come.

I recently purchased the Nikon Coolpix S210 Plum point and shoot for our family. Having a limit budget...but wanting the features and quality of a high end camera, my research lead me to the Nikon Coolpix S210. Let's just say, it has gone above and beyond my expectations.

The S210 features Electronic VR Image Stabilization which is perfect in for adults or if you decide to put it in the hands of students. It also offers extended light sensitivity settings up to ISO 2000 for sharper images, especially in low light conditions or when capturing moving subjects. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically detects and corrects red eye. D-Lighting corrects excessive back-light or insufficient flash. Nikon's Face-Priority AF automatically finds and focuses on up to 12 faces within one frame. The S210 also offers the ability to record movies...and unlike other cameras, it lets you zoom while recording.

This camera is a steal at $179. I give it 8 out of 5 stars!! For more information about the Nikon CoolPix S210 Plum [Click Here]

I couldn't wait to share this one and promise to share more details about it in a future podcast. When asked by educators about a tool for video conferencing, I usually answer Skype. It is safe and secure and FREE! But, recently I stumble across an incredible video conferencing site called PalBee. Now, I haven't given it a real run for its money...but the little bit that I have used of it, I am sold.

Now PalBee is not only an online video conferencing tool that has a built in whiteboard, but it also lets you record and archive your videos so you can share them in the future. It allows up to 9 people to conference in real-time at a time. With the built in whiteboard, members can collaborate by drawing, adding photos or text, and PowerPoint presentations.

I gave up the dreaded corded mouse many years ago and have never looked back. Not only is a wireless mouse a must for adults, but they also are a great addition to school computer labs and laptop carts. I have discovered that not only are there adults who have difficulties using the laptop mouse, there are students who struggle also. So adding a wireless mouse to your laptops purchase is always a wise thing to do...and after seeing this Targus mouse for only $6.95, a lab or laptop cart could easily be filled. One of my favorite things to do is find bargains for teachers. Not just any bargain, but a bargain that is beneficial to instruction and learning in the classroom. Well...here is an item that will help both the teacher and the student. For one day only (May 7th) Yugster is offering an awesome device, which of course I have already purchased, a 55 in 1 USB High Speed Card Reader/Writer. This device is compatible with just about every digital format out there and offers the user so much flexibility,

Not only does this device offer a convenient to copy or remove your digital media device and place it on your computer, but it also allows the reverse. Content can also be pulled from your PC or Mac for storage or backup and placed on your media card. By using this device, your potable media device no longer needs cables.

With the drop in prices of SD cards, teachers and students can use this device to share and exchange assignments in the classroom. Instead of saying, "Please turn in you papers with your names on them." you will hear, " Please turn in your SD cards with your names on them". For more information on the formats this device supports or to order one, please click here: [Click Here]

I forgot to mention that it is only $4.95.

The battle between the Mac and the PC has been raging for years. Many businesses, school districts, and universities either have to choose one or the other, or take on the task of supporting both platforms. But with the with the release of Parallels Desktop for Mac (June 2006), this issue may be resolved.

Parallels is emulation software which allows Mac users the ability to run Windows and its applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered Mac. Users can switch between each operating system without shutting down or adding additional hardware. It allows the user to leave Mac applications open and start up Windows XP through Parallels and switch back and forth. Parallels allows the Mac side to share items such as the network connection, firewire and usb ports with XP.

The benefits of  running Parallels on a Macintosh is that you get the best of both worlds (Mac and PC) with just one computer. So check it out at: [Click Here]

As many of you know, the TechTeacher Network runs with a very low overhead. Those of you who have been listening to the podcast for the last two years know that I continue to use a HP laptop that has seen better days. In fact, I believe I have overhauled it twice since starting this podcast. Because of this, I have had to hold off on the vidcast (video casts) that I used to produce because the laptop can't take the stress...and neither can I : )

My goal for year three is to take this podcast to the next level. That means actually upgrading to a newer computer, so that the production of this podcast can be a little smoother and so I can bring back vidcast and possibly so some live video streaming shows. Another goal is upgrade many of the free services that I currently use to services that would allow more flexibility and listener participation and collaboration. The goal is to make your surfing experience a great learning experience.

If you enjoy the information found on this web site or in the TechTeacher Podcast, please consider making a small donation by clicking on the donation button located in the right hand column.

Lately I have been looking at the many social networking tools out there. To be honest, many of these services offer many of the same features, give or take a tool or two.

Last week I discovered a service called "Pownce". I could tell right away that there was something different about this service. Pownce is social network which lets users send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. This can all be done through you personal Pownce web site or through a free desktop application. After using this service and slowly building my friends list, my thoughts turned of course to the classroom and other learning environments. Could this tool be safely used in education...especially in middle and high school classrooms? I am actually considering using with some upcoming online courses.

So what do you think? Here is my challenge...join Pownce and see what you think. Also, take some time and send me an invite so we can network.

Let's be honest...those of us in education are always looking for great deals. So I am going to share another one of my addictions...or should I say secrets...Yugster.

Yugster is a "One Day Deal" website. They will have one product a day starting at 6:00 am every day until it is sold out. The great thing is that they ususally sell the items at great prices and shipping is never over $5.00. Yugster also has Daily Yugster Offers for members to access a day before they become public. So by becoming a Yugster member gets you first dibs on some great deals. They offer daily deals on computer electronics, consumer electronics, general merchandise, and sometimes hard to find items. The most exciting days to shop are when they are running a YugDown.  When you see the orange banner on the top of Yugster, a YugDown is under way. They dramatically drop their prices for a short period of time. So instead of a daily deal, they keep listing products and once they are gone, they move on to the next. Yugster is owned by PCSecurityShield who is the creator of consumer pc security software.

So, if you are ready to get great deal, please [Click Here]

Whether your school web site or you have a personal blog; wouldn't it be nice to have them pay for themselves. Because we all know schools need extra funding! Now one way may be to contact companies directly, but this takes time and you will probably end up frustrated and discouraged. But have no fear, there is another option, and you get to select what kind of adds you want on your site. The service is LinkShare and it is really simple to use. Just simply sign up and fill in the information about your site. Then, select your category and then browse through the hundreds of companies that are looking to place adds on web sites. Select your advertiser copy the for the ad, paste it on you site, and site back and wait. Now some advertisers may want to look at your site first before letting you post their ad and some will let you post their ads immediately. Each advertiser offer different percents from the sales your site brings in. Give it a try and let me know how it goes. It you would like to sign up, just click on the LinkShare logo in the right hand column of this page under the Yahoo sponsors.

Yes, you heard me correctly...I am still planning on producing my podcast. Many of you have e-mailed me asking if I have given up on my podcasts. The answer is no, but I will need time to get back in the swing of things. For the time being. please keep checking the blog, because blogging is quicker some much easier than producing a podcast. Also, please let me know what you think of the new logo.
